Audience
This page is for Schoology administrators and IT staff who are responsible for installing and configuring DoubleXL Assess before teachers can use it.
Real student data should flow through Assess only after your school or district has formally approved the pilot. Confirm that approval with your data privacy officer or administrator before completing this setup.
Prerequisites
- Schoology administrator access for your organization
- The following LTI 1.3 app details, provided by DoubleXL:
- Issuer:
https://schoology.schoology.com - Client ID (assigned to your institution)
- JWKS URL (provided by DoubleXL)
- Issuer:
Step 1 — Install the LTI 1.3 Tool in Schoology
- In Schoology, go to System Settings > External Tools (or your organization’s equivalent path).
- Create a new External Tool and select LTI 1.3 as the type.
- Enter the Client ID, JWKS URL, and Issuer (
https://schoology.schoology.com) provided by DoubleXL. - Save the configuration. Schoology will generate a Platform ID and other values — record these, as DoubleXL support may request them.
Step 2 — Add the Assess Link to a Course
- Open the course where teachers will use Assess.
- In the course materials, add a new item and select External Tool.
- Choose the DoubleXL Assess tool you just installed.
- Give the link a clear name (for example, Assess) so teachers can find it.
- Repeat for each course section that will use Assess.
Teachers access Assess by clicking this link. There is no separate login.
Step 3 — Register Each Section’s Deployment
Production Assess only accepts launches from registered deployments. An unregistered launch will fail. You must register each section before teachers use it.
Required Fields
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Tenant ID | Your institution’s unique identifier in the Assess platform. Provided by DoubleXL during onboarding. |
| Section ID | The Schoology section identifier for the course section you are registering. |
| Deployment ID | The LTI deployment identifier assigned by Schoology for this tool installation. See the note below on finding this value. |
Option A — Operator Registration Panel
- Open Assess from the course link (a first launch attempt is needed to generate the Deployment ID — see below).
- Navigate to the Operator Registration panel inside Assess.
- Enter the Tenant ID, Section ID, and Deployment ID.
- Submit. The section is now registered.
Option B — Registration Script
If you prefer a command-line approach, DoubleXL provides a register-lti-deployment script. Contact DoubleXL support for the current script and usage instructions.
Finding the Deployment ID
The Deployment ID currently appears in the Assess system logs after a teacher (or admin) makes a first launch attempt from the course. The attempt will fail because the deployment is not yet registered — this is expected. Check the logs immediately after the attempt to retrieve the Deployment ID, then complete registration.
DoubleXL is working to surface this value more directly. Until that change is available, the log-inspection step is required.
Key Operational Rules
- Only registered deployments work in production. The “bootstrap” mode that allows unregistered launches is disabled in production environments.
- Each course section requires its own registration entry.
- If a teacher reports that Assess will not open, verify that the section is registered and that the Deployment ID in the registration matches the one in the logs.
Where Teachers Get Help
Direct teachers to the Help Center pages Start Here and Getting Started. For issues that require configuration changes — missing links, failed launches, gradebook sync problems — teachers should contact you or your helpdesk. For questions about the app itself, contact DoubleXL at schoology@double-xl.com.
