Start Here: Is DoubleXL Assess Right for My Class?

Last updated: June 9, 2026

What DoubleXL Assess Does

DoubleXL Assess is a grading-review tool that runs inside your Schoology course. When students submit written work, Assess uses AI to score it against your rubric and write feedback. You review that suggestion, edit it if needed, and approve it — only then does a grade post to Schoology.

The AI never finishes grading on its own. Every grade your students receive passes through you first.

Assignments It Supports

  • Essays and extended written responses
  • Short-answer questions
  • PDF documents submitted by students
  • Photos of handwritten work

What Assess Does Not Do

  • It does not post grades without your approval.
  • It does not replace your professional judgment about a student’s work.
  • It does not grade in the background while class is running — you work through submissions at your own pace.
  • It does not support multiple-choice, numeric, or auto-graded question types.

The One Rule to Remember

AI suggests. You decide. Every score and piece of feedback is a draft until you approve it. You are always the teacher of record.

What You Need Before You Start

  1. A Schoology course with at least one assignment that has student submissions.
  2. The Assess link added to your course by your school’s IT administrator. It appears as an External Tool item in your course navigation or materials list.

If you do not see the Assess link, contact your administrator. There is no separate login — access comes through Schoology.
