I do not see the Assess link in Schoology
The Assess link is added to Schoology by your administrator as an External Tool (LTI). If you do not see it, contact your administrator and ask them to add the Assess External Tool to your course or school.
No submissions appear in Assess
Click Sync Submissions inside Assess to pull the latest submissions from Schoology. Also confirm that your students have actually submitted their work in Schoology. Assess can only show work that has been submitted, not just saved as a draft.
A submission is stuck on Processing
Grading runs in the background. Wait a few minutes, then click Sync Submissions to refresh the list. If the status still shows Processing after several minutes, click Re-run on that submission. If it remains stuck, contact your administrator — there may be a service issue.
The AI score looks wrong
Use Approve with Edit to correct the score and feedback before it goes to the gradebook. Or click Reject to discard the AI suggestion entirely and enter a grade manually in Schoology. You are never required to use the AI’s score.
I approved a grade but it is not showing in the Schoology gradebook
Check the Schoology gradebook directly — it can take a moment for the passback to complete. If the grade is still missing, open the submission in Assess and approve it again. If the problem continues, contact your administrator to check whether the LTI passback is configured correctly.
Can I change a grade after I have approved it?
Yes. Edit the grade directly in the Schoology gradebook as you normally would. Changes made in Schoology are not affected by Assess.
Does the AI grade automatically without my review?
No. The AI produces a suggestion, and Assess marks it Needs Review. A grade is sent to Schoology only when you click Approve or Approve with Edit. Nothing goes to the gradebook without your action.
A submission shows a Failed status
A Failed status means the AI could not process the submission. Click Re-run to try again. If it fails repeatedly, grade that submission manually and contact your administrator to report the issue.
