Use this table as a quick reference for terms used in Assess and in this Help Center.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Assess | The AI-assisted grading tool made by DoubleXL that runs inside Schoology. |
| Schoology | The learning management system (LMS) your school uses to manage courses, assignments, and grades. |
| LTI / launch | Learning Tools Interoperability — the standard that lets Assess open inside Schoology without a separate login. A “launch” is the act of opening Assess from a Schoology link. |
| Assignment | A graded task created in Schoology that students complete and submit. |
| Submission | The work a student has turned in for a specific assignment in Schoology. |
| Artifact | A file or piece of content that is part of a student’s submission, such as a typed response, PDF, or photo. |
| Sync | The action of pulling the latest submissions from Schoology into Assess so you can see updated work. |
| AI evaluation | The process by which the AI reads the assignment and student work and produces a suggested score and feedback draft. |
| Rubric | A structured set of criteria used to define what a good response looks like and how it will be scored. |
| Criterion | One specific dimension of a rubric (for example, “Organization” or “Use of Evidence”). |
| Score | The numeric or point value the AI suggests for a submission; you confirm or change it before it goes to the gradebook. |
| Confidence | A 0–100% estimate of how certain the AI is about its suggested score. Lower confidence means review the work more carefully. |
| Feedback draft | The written comment the AI generates to accompany the score. You can edit it before approving. |
| Approve | Accept the AI’s score and feedback as-is; sends the grade to Schoology. |
| Approve with Edit | Modify the score or feedback before confirming; sends the edited grade to Schoology. |
| Reject | Discard the AI suggestion; no grade is sent to Schoology, and you grade the work manually. |
| Re-run | Ask the AI to evaluate the submission again from scratch, useful when a result looks wrong or a processing error occurred. |
| Passback | The automated step that sends an approved grade from Assess back to the Schoology gradebook via LTI. |
| Needs Review | A status badge meaning the AI has finished its evaluation and the submission is waiting for your decision. |
| Administrator / operator | The person at your school or district who configured Assess, manages the LTI connection, and handles data and service questions. |
